Best Online Tax Filing Services for Freelancers by Country 2026

Best Online Tax Filing Services for Freelancers by Country 2026

By the Jobbers Editorial Team · Updated October 2026

Ask ten freelancers what they dread most about the job, and a good number will skip “finding clients” and go straight to tax season. Not because the maths is hard, but because the rules change every year, they change differently in every country, and nobody sends you a memo.

2026 has been a busy year on that front. The IRS shut down Direct File. The UK finally switched on Making Tax Digital for sole traders. India moved its filing deadline for freelancers. France raised its micro-entrepreneur ceilings for the first time in three years. If you filed the same way you did in 2024, there’s a real chance something in your process is now out of date.

This guide walks through the online filing options that actually work for self-employed people in eight countries: the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, India and Morocco. For each one, we cover the free government route first (there almost always is one), then the paid tools worth considering, and the 2026 rule changes you need to know about.

⚠️ Important notice: This article is general information, not tax, legal or financial advice. Tax thresholds, deadlines, rates and software features change frequently, and some figures below may have been updated after publication. Always verify every number and date with the official tax authority of your country (links are provided in each section) or with a qualified accountant before making any filing decision. Jobbers.io accepts no liability for decisions made on the basis of this content.

Why freelancers need a different kind of tax software

Salaried employees can often get away with the most basic version of any tax product. Their employer withholds tax, sends a single income statement, and the return practically fills itself in.

Freelancers don’t get that luxury. Your return usually has to handle:

  • Business income from several clients, sometimes in different currencies and from different countries
  • Deductible expenses such as software subscriptions, equipment, a share of your internet bill or a home office
  • Self-employment or social contributions that sit on top of income tax
  • Advance or quarterly payments, because no one is withholding tax on your behalf
  • VAT, GST or sales tax once you cross a registration threshold

That’s why the “free” tier of a commercial product is often useless for freelancers. It’s typically limited to wage income. The better question to ask isn’t “which tool is cheapest?” but “which tool supports the self-employed forms in my country, and does the government already offer that for free?”

United States: life after Direct File

The biggest US story this year is something that disappeared. The IRS told participating states in late 2025 that Direct File would not be offered for the 2026 filing season, ending the free government-built filing tool after two pilot years (IRS Free File page). Honestly, Direct File never covered Schedule C business income anyway, so most freelancers weren’t using it. But it’s worth knowing so you don’t go looking for it.

Best free options

  • IRS Free File (guided software): For the 2026 season, eight private companies offered free guided software to taxpayers with a 2025 adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less, up from $84,000 the year before. Partners included FreeTaxUSA (TaxHawk), TaxAct, TaxSlayer, 1040.com, FileYourTaxes.com, OLT, 1040NOW and ezTaxReturn.com. Each partner sets its own extra conditions (age, state, income), so check whether the one you pick supports Schedule C and Schedule SE before you start. The threshold for next season had not been announced at the time of writing.
  • Free File Fillable Forms: No income limit at all. You get electronic versions of the IRS forms with basic maths and nothing else. If you’re comfortable reading IRS instructions, it’s a genuinely free way to file a self-employed return.

Paid options freelancers commonly use

FreeTaxUSA, TaxAct, TaxSlayer, TurboTax and H&R Block all sell self-employed tiers that handle Schedule C, Schedule SE and quarterly estimates. Prices and what’s included shift every season, so compare the self-employed tier specifically, not the headline price.

What changed for US freelancers in 2026

  • Under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, clients only have to send a Form 1099-NEC once they pay you $2,000 or more in a calendar year, starting with payments made in 2026 (it was $600). The threshold will be indexed to inflation from 2027.
  • The Form 1099-K threshold for payment apps and marketplaces is back to more than $20,000 and more than 200 transactions.
  • None of this changes what you owe. You still report all freelance income, form or no form, and self-employment tax is still 15.3% (12.4% Social Security plus 2.9% Medicare) on net earnings, subject to the usual limits. See the IRS Self-Employed Individuals Tax Center.

United Kingdom: Making Tax Digital is now live

After years of delays, Making Tax Digital for Income Tax became mandatory on 6 April 2026 for sole traders and landlords whose qualifying income from self-employment and property is over £50,000. The threshold falls to £30,000 in April 2027 and £20,000 in April 2028. HMRC estimated around 780,000 people would be in the first wave, and it began automatically signing up people who hadn’t enrolled from September 2026.

If you’re in scope, you now keep digital records and send quarterly updates through MTD-compatible software. HMRC’s own online Self Assessment service doesn’t do this for you.

Best options

  • HMRC online Self Assessment: Still free, and still the right route if your qualifying income is £50,000 or less for now. The online deadline for the 2025–26 tax year is 31 January 2027, and a late return triggers an initial £100 penalty (GOV.UK deadlines).
  • Free MTD software: GOV.UK publishes a searchable list of compatible software, and you can filter it for free products. Start there rather than with an ad.
  • Paid tools: FreeAgent (free for customers of some UK banks), GoSimpleTax, Xero and QuickBooks are popular with freelancers. Check that the plan supports both quarterly updates and the final declaration.

Canada: free NETFILE software goes a long way

Canada is one of the friendliest countries for DIY filers. The CRA certifies a list of NETFILE software, and several of those products are free with no income limit (Canada.ca: How to file).

Best options

  • Wealthsimple Tax, StudioTax and other free certified software: These can handle Form T2125 (business and professional income) and pull your slips straight from the CRA with Auto-fill My Return.
  • TurboTax Canada, H&R Block Canada and UFile: Paid self-employed tiers add guidance on expenses, CCA (depreciation) and GST/HST.
  • SimpleFile: The CRA’s own free service exists, but it’s by invitation and aimed at simple, low-income returns, so most freelancers won’t qualify.

The deadline trap

Self-employed Canadians had until June 15, 2026 to file their 2025 return, but any balance owing was due April 30, 2026. Interest started on April 30 regardless. Many first-year freelancers read “June 15” and get caught out. The CRA also confirmed that the lowest federal income tax rate dropped from 15% to 14% from July 1, 2025 (CRA 2026 filing season).

Australia: myTax works for straightforward sole traders

If you’re reading this in October 2026, this section is urgent. Self-lodgers must submit their 2025–26 return by 31 October 2026, and because that date is a Saturday, the effective deadline is Monday 2 November 2026. If you register with a tax agent before then, you can usually access their later lodgment program.

Best options

  • myTax via myGov (free): Sole traders report business income in their individual return and complete the business schedule within myTax. It’s well suited to simple setups with clean records (ATO: How to lodge).
  • Registered tax agent: Worth it if you have mixed income, GST registration or personal services income questions. Agent fees for managing your tax affairs are generally deductible.

One rule surprises newcomers: if you carried on a business as a sole trader at any point during the year, you generally need to lodge even if you made a loss.

Germany: ELSTER does the job, if you can get through it

Freelancers and self-employed people in Germany generally must file electronically, and Mein ELSTER is the free official portal. It supports the Anlage EÜR (the simplified profit calculation most freelancers use) and the VAT returns.

The 2025 return was due by 31 July 2026 if you filed yourself. With a Steuerberater or Lohnsteuerhilfeverein, the deadline runs to 1 March 2027. Late returns can attract a surcharge of at least €25 per month started.

Paid alternatives

WISO Steuer, smartsteuer and SteuerGo are the commercial products freelancers mention most, mainly because they explain what ELSTER only asks. Some popular apps are built for employees first, so confirm that the version you buy covers self-employment and the Anlage EÜR before paying.

A note on the new “Steuererklärung mit einem Klick” in the MeinELSTER+ app, launched in July 2026: it currently only covers simple cases such as employees and pensioners with no other income. It’s not for freelancers yet.

France: two portals, two jobs

French freelancers under the micro-entrepreneur (auto-entrepreneur) regime deal with two separate systems, and it’s easy to confuse them:

  • URSSAF auto-entrepreneur portal: You declare turnover monthly or quarterly and pay social contributions (autoentrepreneur.urssaf.fr).
  • impots.gouv.fr: You report that turnover once a year on your income tax return, in the spring (impots.gouv.fr).

For 2026–2028, the micro-regime ceiling for service activities rose to €83,600 (from €77,700), and to €203,100 for sales activities, according to the French Ministry of Economy. The VAT franchise thresholds for services stayed at €37,500 (base) and €41,250 (upper). Those two sets of numbers are different things, and mixing them up is one of the most common mistakes we see.

Both government portals are free. Once you leave the micro-regime, online accounting services such as Indy or an online chartered accountant become far more useful.

India: new deadlines under the new Act

AY 2026-27 is the first assessment year under the Income Tax Act, 2025, and the Finance Act 2026 introduced staggered deadlines. Salaried filers using ITR-1 or ITR-2 kept 31 July, while non-audit business and professional taxpayers filing ITR-3 or ITR-4, which covers most freelancers, got until 31 August 2026. If you missed it, a belated return can still be filed until 31 December 2026, with a late fee of up to ₹5,000, and the window for revised returns now runs to 31 March 2027.

Best options

  • Income Tax e-filing portal (free): Handles ITR-3 and ITR-4 and pre-fills a lot from your AIS/TIS.
  • ClearTax, Tax2Win and Quicko: Private platforms with freelancer-oriented flows, presumptive taxation calculators and optional expert-assisted filing.

ITR-4 (Sugam) can be used by eligible residents with income of up to ₹50 lakh under presumptive taxation. Because section numbers changed with the new Act, older blog posts may cite references that no longer match. Go by the current forms.

Morocco: the auto-entrepreneur regime and the 80,000 dirham rule

For Moroccan freelancers, the auto-entrepreneur status remains the simplest setup. Turnover is declared quarterly, and income tax is a flat rate on turnover: 1% for services (up to MAD 200,000 a year) and 0.5% for commercial, industrial and artisanal activities (up to MAD 500,000). A declaration is required even when turnover is zero, and payment is typically made through Barid Al-Maghrib.

The rule that catches people is the one introduced by the 2023 Finance Law. If you invoice more than MAD 80,000 a year to a single client for services, the amount above that is subject to a 30% withholding tax applied by the client. Parliament has discussed raising this threshold, but check the Direction Générale des Impôts for the current figure before you plan around a change.

For freelancers above the auto-entrepreneur ceilings, the DGI’s online services (SIMPL) and a local chartered accountant are usually the practical route.

How to choose: a five-question checklist

  1. Does the free government option already cover self-employed income in my country? In Germany, Australia and France, the answer is mostly yes.
  2. Does the tool support the specific self-employed form I need? Schedule C, T2125, Anlage EÜR, ITR-3 and so on.
  3. Can it handle foreign-currency or cross-border income if your clients are abroad?
  4. Does it help with quarterly or advance payments, not just the annual return?
  5. Is the price for the self-employed tier, including state or regional returns, clearly shown before you start?

Where Jobbers fits in

Tax software can only work with the records you give it. That’s where your choice of platform matters more than most people think.

On jobbers.io, freelancers and clients agree on payment terms directly, and the platform takes no commission on the work. That makes your bookkeeping simpler in one important way: the amount you invoice is the amount you earned, with no platform fees to deduct and reconcile at year end. Freelancers do buy credits to send proposals, which, as a business expense, you’ll want to keep receipts for.

Because payments are arranged between you and your client rather than processed by the platform, Jobbers won’t send you a tax form summarising your earnings. Keep your own invoices and payment confirmations, and you’ll have everything any of the tools above need. If you’re looking for new freelance jobs without losing a cut of every project, it’s worth a look.

Five habits that make any tax tool easier

  • Use a separate bank account for freelance income and expenses.
  • Issue numbered invoices for every client, including platform clients.
  • Photograph receipts the day you get them.
  • Set aside a fixed percentage of every payment for tax and social contributions.
  • Put your country’s deadlines in your calendar now, including advance payment dates.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best free tax filing option for freelancers in the US in 2026?

If your adjusted gross income was $89,000 or less, IRS Free File guided software from partners such as FreeTaxUSA, TaxAct or TaxSlayer was the main free option for the 2026 season, provided the partner you choose supports Schedule C. Above that limit, Free File Fillable Forms are free with no income cap. Direct File was not available in 2026.

Is IRS Direct File still available for freelancers?

No. The IRS confirmed that Direct File would not be available for Filing Season 2026, and no return date has been announced. It also never supported Schedule C business income, so most freelancers were not eligible to use it.

Do I still have to report freelance income if I don’t get a 1099 form?

Yes. In the US, all self-employment income must be reported whether or not you receive a Form 1099-NEC or 1099-K. From 2026, clients only have to issue a 1099-NEC once they pay you $2,000 or more in a year, so many freelancers will receive fewer forms, but the income is still taxable.

Who has to use Making Tax Digital in the UK in 2026?

From 6 April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income from self-employment and property over £50,000 must use MTD for Income Tax. The threshold drops to £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028. You’ll need MTD-compatible software to send quarterly updates to HMRC.

When do self-employed Canadians have to file and pay their taxes?

For 2025 income, self-employed individuals had until June 15, 2026 to file, but any tax owed was due by April 30, 2026. Interest applies from April 30 even if you file on time in June.

Can sole traders in Australia use myTax?

Yes. Sole traders report business income in their individual return and can complete the business schedule in myTax. For the 2025–26 income year, the self-lodgment deadline is 31 October 2026, which moves to 2 November 2026 because 31 October falls on a Saturday.

Is ELSTER suitable for freelancers in Germany?

Yes. Mein ELSTER is free and supports the Anlage EÜR and VAT returns that freelancers need. Commercial products such as WISO Steuer add more guidance. The 2025 return was due by 31 July 2026 for self-filers, or 1 March 2027 with a tax adviser.

What is the micro-entrepreneur turnover ceiling in France for 2026?

For 2026 to 2028, the ceiling is €83,600 for service activities and €203,100 for sales of goods and accommodation. These are separate from the VAT franchise thresholds, which remain €37,500 and €41,250 for services.

What is the ITR deadline for freelancers in India for AY 2026-27?

Non-audit freelancers and professionals filing ITR-3 or ITR-4 had until 31 August 2026. A belated return can be filed until 31 December 2026 with a late fee of up to ₹5,000. Taxpayers who need a tax audit have until 31 October 2026.

How are auto-entrepreneurs taxed in Morocco?

Auto-entrepreneurs pay a flat 1% of turnover for services (up to MAD 200,000 a year) and 0.5% for commercial, industrial and artisanal activities (up to MAD 500,000). Turnover is declared quarterly. Service income above MAD 80,000 a year from a single client is subject to a 30% withholding tax applied by that client.

Does Jobbers.io take a commission or issue tax forms?

Jobbers.io takes no commission on freelance work. Freelancers and clients discuss and agree on payment directly, so the platform does not issue earnings summaries or tax forms. Freelancers should keep their own invoices and payment records for their tax return.
