Transcriptionist Job Description Summary/Objective We are seeking a highly accurate and detail-oriented Transcriptionist to convert audio and video recordings into high-quality written documents. The ideal candidate possesses exceptional listening and typing skills, a strong command of grammar and punctuation, and the ability to handle confidential information with discretion. Key Responsibilities and Duties Listen to audio and video recordings (such as interviews, meetings, dictations, podcasts, etc.) and accurately transcribe the content into a written text format. Review, proofread, and edit draft transcripts, including those generated by speech recognition software, to ensure precision in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and adherence to client/company style guidelines. Research and verify the correct spelling of unfamiliar names, terms, medical jargon, or legal terminology (especially for specialized transcription roles). Format transcripts according to specifications, which may include adding timestamps or creating subtitles. Manage and organize audio files and completed transcripts for efficient retrieval. Maintain strict confidentiality and discretion regarding all transcribed materials. Meet daily or weekly deadlines and manage time effectively to complete assigned projects. Communicate with clients or supervisors to clarify instructions or resolve issues with poor audio quality. Required Skills and Qualifications Proven experience as a Transcriptionist or in a related field is preferred (may be waived for general transcription roles upon successful test completion). Exceptional listening skills, with the ability to decipher various accents, low-quality audio, and multiple speakers. Excellent typing speed and accuracy (often 60-80 WPM or higher is desired). Strong command of the English language, including advanced grammar, punctuation, and vocabulary. High level of attention to detail and accuracy. Proficiency with word processing software (e.g., Microsoft Word, Google Docs) and comfort using transcription software and equipment (e.g., foot pedals). Strong organizational and time-management skills to work independently and meet deadlines. Ability to maintain focus for long periods. For Specialized Roles (Legal or Medical): Specific knowledge of legal or medical terminology and relevant certifications may be required. Equipment/Work Environment Reliable computer or laptop. High-speed internet connection. High-quality, noise-canceling headphones (recommended). Quiet work environment (especially for remote work).
